Day 6

Absolute silence. That's exactly what a hotel sounds like at 4:30am. In the middle of it all was Jose, Patricia, Steve, and myself preparing ourselves for a 7:15am flight back home. So why the extra early time? The hotel shuttle had the convenient airport shuttle times of 5:00am, 7:00am and 9:00am. But no worries, we all were a bit anxious to head home after traipsing the coffee fields for the last week and see our families. It was amazing how many people were actually up and moving about the city at 5:00am on a Saturday.

Day 5

Hearing the sound of so many birds singing and the scent of the various foliage grown just outside the room window, made it easier to wake up after five hours of sleep. The finca we visited today was about 2 hours away, again through people eating potholes so we needed to head out by 8am from the hotel. The desayuno (breakfast) tipico (traditional) was delicious and filling. After packing my bags, I checked out with the front desk which still handles everything by paper and pencil – they don’t have a computer for any sort of records but they did have a credit card charging machine.

Day 4

Prior to going to bed, we had agreed to meet for breakfast at 7:30 am as we were going to have a long day of driving - coffee areas are at least a couple hours out from Managua. Everybody seemed refreshed after a good few hours of sleep and ready to start the day. Henrik Bang, a trader from the Exportadora Atlantic S.A. (ECOM Division), met us for breakfast. Henrik has been working in the Managua office for several years and is very well versed in the culture and especially the coffee industry.

Day 3

Today actually began before yesterday even ended. That may sound impossible, but Jose and I did not wrap up our day yesterday until we finally posted our blog entry at 1:30am local time. It is often said that the coffee industry never sleeps and I am inclined to believe that. After a mere 5 ½ hours of sleep – actually not that far from normal – I awoke still tired in the middle of San Salvador. Eager to start the day, I got ready and joined the group for breakfast and with that, our day officially began.
